Will The Rock Play Black Adam in the Shazam Movie?
Recently Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was doing the press rounds for Hercules when he confirmed the longstanding rumours of a Shazam movie. That in itself is a reason to celebrate, but there’s more good news. Speaking with the Associated Press, he said that he was weighing which role to take on, he also said that he has a soft spot for anti-heroes. This means that The Rock presumably has some flexibility in which role he plays. Whichever role it is, the studio will have to find someone equally bad ass to play opposite him.
Consider Johnson as Captain Marvel; an ideal and naïve hero. While The Rock frequently plays the good guy, a starry-eyed mortal who relies on the powers of the gods is a stretch from how we’ve seen him before. On the flip side, Black Adam may be the villain of the story which would make this role an unusual one, but he is every bit the bad ass that we are used to seeing Johnson portray. On top of that, Johnson’s comment that he is drawn to anti-heroes suggests that he will be taking Black Adam on; it’s very easy to imagine him as the ancient Egyptian predecessor to Captain Marvel and someone who is jealous of Captain Marvel’s power. The Rock would be an appropriately threatening villain for DC’s Shazam.
