What to Watch: Kings
In a new Cancelled Too Soon edition of Watch to Watch. I’m strongly recommending NBC’s axed Fantasy/Biblical Drama Kings. It’s got all the good stuff; action, violence, romance, illicit affairs and beautiful people. And like most great shows. NBC cancelled it.
Fill the void left by Game of Thrones with another drama surrounding the literal game of thrones. Kings barely lasted a season but it’s heavy dramatics and original concept makes a lasting impression.
This brilliant re-imagining of the biblical story of King David takes place in a unique storyverse, placing absolute monarchy that is befitting of a period piece into a modern war torn world with modern weapons and attitudes. There is war, terrorism, nepotism, romance and some seriously strange mystical happenings.
This is a story of a reluctant war hero, Captain David Sheppard who after destroying a Goliath tank in battle becomes the darling of the nation winning the hearts not only of the people but of the princess. He is brought out of his element and into the world of high command forcing him to make some difficult choices.
The King’s jealously takes over his best judgement and he ignores all the signs in front of him as he is reluctant to see that his kingdom is crumbling before him.
Beyond that is a modern story of a high profile political family rife with scandal, love and drama.
You can now catch this unique beautiful aesthetics and engaging story on DVD, just prepare to have your heart broken as you finish the discs as we won’t be getting a second season.
Kings stars Ian McShane as King Silas Benjamin (biblical King Saul) and Christopher Egan as Capt. David Sheppard. Other starts include the amazing Eamonn Walker as the Reverend Ephram Samuels. Plus Macauley Culkin is in this, and he’s kind of awesomely badass.
Kings is available on DVD , Hulu and Netflix.
