The Walking Dead Walked at Midnight – Celebrating A Decade of TWD
To celebrate a decade of comics, at 12:01 am (local time), hundreds of stores world-wide saw The Walking Dead walk out the door. The celebrations included different covers, twelve of which form a larger picture with story highlights from the series. Also available were the “party variant”, a sketch cover, and a colourized copy of issue 115, the tenth anniversary issue. Not to be contained to two dimensions, there were also exclusive McFarlane Toy figures and a limited number of posters.
In Toronto, theComic Book Lounge and Gallery on College celebrated with the assistance of two local artists, Christopher Yao (Holmes Incorporated) and Shane Amaato who were sketching for those waiting to purchase at midnight. And there were fans from all corners of the city admiring the covers that showed key moments of ten years of adventures of Rick Grimes and his band of survivors. Some fans had found the comic after watching the AMC show, while others had been pleased when their comic got the television treatment. They discussed the novelizations, how the characters differed between the various media and, like most geeks, what collectibles had been collected. One person walked away with the door sign, while others received wall sized posters of the “Party Variant”.
These fans were part of a global phenomenon with certain stores opening at local midnight across the US, eight provinces, the United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, Germany, Mexico, and the Philippines. Not bad for a comic whose first issue originally had a 7,300 print run.
