The Walking Dead Recap: Can We Try To Trust Strangers?

After going through one heck of a battle with walkers, explosions, badass Carol and the downfall of Terminus, the group is now out and about trying to find some supplies and food. We are now seeing the group in a more vulnerable position instead of having stability like the farm or the prison. It’s back to camping out and scavenging around for whatever they need and it’s going to be tough and judging by tonights episode, they are in for some difficult times.

*SPOILERS AHEAD!!*

“You are not safe. No matter how many people are around, or how clear the area looks. No matter what anyone says, no matter what you think. You are not safe. It only takes on second. One second, and it’s over. Never let your guard down, ever.” – Rick.

The episode starts off with plenty of walking and most of the group members are talking to each other. Rick and Carol actually have a conversation and he makes the statement that he sent her out into this world (if you remember he told Carol to leave the group back in season 4) and now they’re right there with her. It seems like Rick and Carol have an understanding and do really respect each other immensely. One of the nights, Carol and Daryl are up keeping watch and Daryl suddenly hears something. They both get up to see what it was, but they didn’t see anything. Daryl does get the feeling they were being watched. We as an audience, see that there is someone who suddenly moves away.

The next morning when they start walking again, they suddenly hear someone screaming for help. Carl tells Rick that they have to go help and they all decide to run in the direction and help out.  They find someone on top of a rock, surrounded by walkers and trying to kick them away, but not being successful with it. They kill those walkers and we get see that this person is Father Gabriel (comic book readers know who this is!). They have some awkward exchanges and then Rick tells him to put his arms up and he checks him for potential weapons. While he does this, he asks the 3 questions we hadn’t heard him ask in a long time. How many walkers have you killed? How many people? Why? It brought back the season 4 feels!

He tells them he lives in a church and hasn’t really left that church at all throughout the time this outbreak has happened. The group thinks that maybe Father Gabriel could be the one who was watching them the night before, but he says no. They all head over to the church and walk in to scan the place.

Next up, the rest of the episode had some WOAH and OH MY GOODNESS moments. This season is shaping up as one heck of a great season and it’s only episode 2 right now. Rick, Bob, Sasha, Michonne and Father Gabriel head over to a food bank and when they go inside they see a ditch full of disgusting and rotten water and walkers. (Those walkers were very badass) Since they see that there’s food in the ditch, they decide to give it a try and get down there. They kill off the walkers, with one nearly getting Bob, but we see Father Gabriel begin to cry and get incredibly scared when one particular walker showed up. When they got all the food, they headed back to the church.

Rick catches up to Carl who was in the back of the church and they see marks on the back of the church and it seems as if someone was trying to get in. They also see the words “You’ll burn for this”. Did he lock up the church and not let people in who were suffering outside? Most likely. The group has a night of eating food and enjoying a little bit of happiness. Each person finally seems really happy. Abraham then makes a speech and also tells them to really consider going to Washington with them for the cure and happiness. They all agree. Tara actually sits next to Maggie and lets her know that she was at the prison when Hershel died in the hands of The Governor and she decides to forgive her and let her in. Rick also does this towards the beginning of the episode, telling her he knew she didn’t want to be there. This episode turned into an acceptance episode for Tara. She’s in.

Bob and Sasha share a moment where they kiss two times and it seems as if Bob is acting like he might’ve gotten bit when they were at the food bank earlier, he walks out of the church (limping slightly) and looks incredibly sad. We also then see Carol go to a car (that she and Daryl found at one point during the episode) and it seemed like she was going to leave. Suddenly, the car that took Beth back in season 4 drove by full speed and Daryl gets the car running and takes Carol and they follow the car in hopes that they’ll find Beth. Now, back to Bob….he begins to cry as he leans on a tree and it almost feels like he’s about to perhaps end his life (maybe he did get bit and was emotional, because he was going to end his life?) and suddenly the hooded figure that was spying on them in the beginning of the episode knocks him out. If you’ve read the comics you most likely know how this will all unfold, because it’s looking like it’ll go in that route. If you haven’t then you’re probably confused and shocked! The end of the episode shows that Gareth and some of his Terminus people (including the person who Tyreese said he killed in the last episode) all around a fire and eating something. We then realize it’s Bob who is dizzy and waking up from being knocked out and Gareth talks to him about the group taking his home away from him and that they’re now hunters (comic readers will know how this ends up). We then see that they cut off Bob’s leg and were cooking it and eating it. “You taste much better than we thought you would”.

This season is getting ruthless and gruesome, and it might just end up being the best season yet. I personally love how they’ve been tying everything together. Lots of comics material being used. Rick is becoming a very in charge leader again and is really thinking about the well being of this group. He even at one point tells Father Gabriel that these people are his family and if he harms them he will kill him. He’s even quick to accept going to Washington. It’s a side of Rick we all love. He’s definitely going to be the one who takes down Gareth eventually. The episode was had some easter eggs, with all the Bible verses. We probably should’ve figured out Bob would end up in this position. Will Bob get saved? Are other group members going to be taken by Gareth and his Terminus folks? Where the hell is Beth and will Daryl and Carol find her? Why didn’t anyone actually think of Beth before deciding to go to Washington? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below!
