LISTEN TO: Unlocking The Truth a.k.a. 11-Year Olds Who Are More Metal Than You
While most pre-teens people are busy playing Black OPs, these kids are busy shredding. And I mean, shredding. I’ll admit, when I first heard about the underage Brooklyn band, Unlocking The Truth my first reaction was ‘awwww, cute!’ but after listening, all I can do is shake my head and go, ‘whoa,’ because these kids are heavy.
Guitarist, Malcolm Brickhouse rips out riffs without even looking, while bassist Alec Atkins and drummer Jarad Dawkins add a solid groove that round out the band’s metalcore sound. According to Unlocking The Truth’s website, the trio is influenced by bands like Escape the Fate, Metallica and Disturbed, though it was WWE wrestling and the hyper kinetic-fight music from the manga, ‘Naruto’ that inspired them. And for a band that can’t even vote or technically play in clubs yet, Unlocking The Truth have already recorded two full length albums titled, “Madness” (about an exorcism) and “Paranoid”, as well as gigged at the Apollo Theatre and Times Square. Oh yeah, I should probably also mention that their first (!?) band was called TEARS OF BLOOD. Um, that’s kinda awesome. Times infinity.
For kids to be putting established metal bands to shame, I can only imagine the eardrums they will be splitting by the time they’re legal. Just listen to those breakdowns! Kind of makes me wish I’d spent more of my youth playing my guitar instead of playing SNES… (Except for the fact that I can finish Donkey Kong Country in one sitting).
