Sonic Separation. Nothing Makes Sense Anymore.
And now for a tale of bad news/good news. The bad news being is Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore announced their separation after 27 years of marriage. Many pivotal musicians are known for joining the ’27 club’, reserved for rock stars who have met their untimely fate all at the age of 27. Kim and Thurston have made it well beyond 27 years of age but seem to be joining their own club in a way. Kind of like a sister chapter or something. If it were anyone else I would say that I smelled a publicity stunt, however I just don’t see that with these guys. Bummer.
So what does this mean for Sonic Youth? This is where the good news kicks in.
The good news is that Sonic Youth are still following through with plans to tour South America this fall. But afterwards? Plans are uncertain. According to a statement released by a Matador Records rep,
“Musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, married in 1984, are announcing they have separated. Sonic Youth, who both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The Couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment.”
Let’s hope they can stick it out for the sake of the band. It may be a bit too late to stage a brother/sister relationship like the White Stripes, but damn, if Jack and Meg could do it post divorce surely Kim and Thurston can too. Do it for the kids, guys!
