Shorts That Are Not Pants – short film screening
Some people really like shorts. In fact, Shorts That Are Not Pants started as a home screening, but has grown to include several events throughout the year. This Thursday (July 17) provides a slate of international short films, including those from the UK, Belgium, Finland, France, Spain, and several from Canada whose length ranges from 2:30 to 22 minutes each. The film styles include animation, stop motion, and live action. There are many award winners and a few Canadian debuts, but you want to know what the films are about, don’t you?
Belgium’s “Perfect Drug”, directed by Toon Aerts, follows a team on inept burglars who have the (unlabeled) contents of a lab in their back seat, when one of them decides to sample their loot. “Mean Teddies”, directed by Canada’s Tyler Novo, is about a decision a teddy bear must make to protect his boy or step aside. Given the still, these are not your normal fluffy teddies! Liam Saint-Pierre of the UK explore what happens to a shopkeeper who is trying to hold off against the digital world in “The Way of the Dodo”. And anyone who’s had roommates can understand the escalation in John Alden Milne’s “The Standoff” where a sandwich and laundry become a battleground.
There are others as well, but part of the fun of this series is the joy of discovering the unexpected. Starting at 7 pm, the $12 screening is at the Carlton Cinemas (20 Carlton Street just east of Yonge), which is both air conditioned AND licensed – not a bad thing during summer in the city.
While some of the summer’s big films are clocking in at almost three hours, why not see what you can get in more bite sized packages? And, if you’ve made it this far into the article, check out GEEKPR0N’s facebook page for a chance to win a pair of tickets to Thursday’s short film screening!
