Rubik’s Art from Cube Works

Today’s featured artist, another one of the amazing GEEKPR0N Launch Party sponsors, is the infamous Cube Works. They’ll be doing LIVE “cubing” of an 8-bit Mario at the show so you won’t want to miss this.

Cube Works Studio is a Toronto-based design studio which specializes in creating large-scale art and images using only Rubik’s Cubes. Most recently, the team set a Guinness World record for creating the world’s largest Rubik’s Cube art piece – daVinci’s “Last Supper” which measures over 17 feet across and over 8 feet in height. The piece, comprised of 4,050 Rubik’s Cubes is the first of it’s kind.

The Cube Works Studio creation of daVinci’s ‘Last Supper’ has been accepted by Guinness World Records as both a new category of achievement as well as setting a new world record. What make this unique is that the recreation is entirely made of Rubik style cubes – 4,050 of them to be exact. The finished piece measures 17′
wide by 8.5′ in height and weighs in at 1,000 lbs.

Cube Works Studio uses the cube as a unique, technically complex medium for making art. It is a collaboration of graphic artists along with ‘cube-ists’ who’s art is a retro yet avant-garde re-contextualizing of the aesthetic possibilities of the 80’s toy craze, the Rubik’s cube.

Other pieces consist of iconic images of musicians, celebrities,
Politicians, as well as other famous art by Andy Warhol, and classics
from da Vinci and Van Gogh. The end result is stunning, with replicas of photos jumping from the cube formed ‘canvas’, complete with subtleties in shading and depth.

Cube Works studio is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and is the brain child of Josh Chalom it’s Creative Director.
