The Pull List: Top 5 Picks for April 9
It’s a good week to be me, a lot of my favourite books are in rotation this week. I tried to keep bias out of my top 5 picks, but I openly admit that it sometimes sneaks in. Bearing that in mind, here are my recommendations.
5. Coffin Hill #7
Coffin Hill might have had a slow start, but it has built a world of dark supernatural mystery. Issue 7 takes place after the close of the first story arc, and will be a stand alone issue, so if you’re looking for a book with magic, mystery, witchcraft and grisly murders, you should give Coffin Hill a try.
4. Secret Avengers #2
Ok, as a huge fan of Agent Phil Coulson I am admittedly biased, but there are solid reasons to be reading this book. Secret Avengers is a super-team book that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The characters are sardonic and the story relies heavily on their dysfunctional relationships which only adds to the humor. And in case that isn’t enough of a selling point: M.O.D.O.K.
3. East of West #11
East of West is my favourite running series right now. It’s a post apocalyptic western that follows Death as he looks for what he’s lost with the remaining three horsemen in pursuit. It tackles huge questions such as the meaning of love and the separation of church and state, but is has an engaging plot and mysterious characters that exist in a remarkably complete science-fiction world. It does need to be read from the beginning, but you will not regret picking up the first graphic.
2. Batman Eternal #1
Batman is getting a new strory. DC teases that Batman Eternal “examines the relationship between Batman, his allies, and his city” according to DC. If the fact that it’s a new Batman book isn’t enough leverage for you, the fact that Scott Snyder is writing is should seal the deal.
1. Nightcrawler #1
Comic book legend Chris Claremont is bringing Nightcrawler back from the dead. The blue elf is rejoining the world and he’s guaranteed to find it very different then when he left it. Of course some things are bound to be the same, Nightcrawler will no doubt return to his swashbuckling ways, and who doesn’t love a good BAMF?
