Pop goes the Atomic Lollipop Convention
This year Atomic Lollipop (A-Pop) is at the Ontario Science Centre and beyond the usual fun of the Science Centre, there’s a plethora of activities, over 200 in all. There are performances, including Geeky Burlesque, a Sailor Moon edition of FanFiction the Show, and even The Dandies’ Holodeck Follies; interactive items like the Super Belligerent Disney Karaoke Funtimes; a Night Bazaar (artists and other vendors), as well as the not so usual panels, workshops, games, and sports. Check out the speed dating and speed friending. Oh, did I mention the bouncy castles?
Some fandoms have special focused events. For Potterheads , there are a several panels for you including Care of Magical Creatures (including real live owls and snakes), Charms, Divinations, and Potions. Study hard because there’s also Ordinary Wizarding Level Exams (O.W.L.s) and of course a Tri-Wizard Tournament and Quidditch classes. And if you don’t already have one, there’s a chance to work with Ollivander’s Wand Shop to create your own.
For those who are concerned with the fate of the Iron Throne, there’s Cards against Westeros game, GoT parody memes, panel of conspiracy theories, bitch session, as well as build a crown (to be fair, this one’s a multi-fandom activity).
For lovers of the undead, join the Zombie Prom after visiting the “Undead make-up station”. Or be on the other side of the equation and on Saturday join the Zombie Survival Camp!
For the Lolitas, there are panels like DIY Lolita, Lolita 101 &201, and of course Canada’s Next Top Lolita contest!
For the Star Wars contingent, it’s BYOLight Saber for the Lightsaber Battle.
If you want to learn, there are classes including D.J.ing, voice acting, and aerial acrobatics amongst others.
And then there are also odd items that caught my eye. The top one must be the Ramen Eating Contest. Enter as either a solo act or as part of a tag team (eater/feeder). The goal is to see how much ramen you can eat in 10 minutes. For those not brave (or hungry) enough to participate can cheer the contestants on.
And for those who want to collect them all…there’s a snap photo competition of Pokemon cosplayers throughout the Con, or be part of the Great Dragonball Hunt.
There are weekend tickets for $79.99 or single day passes for $30/35, plus taxes. Its hours are 6pm to 2 am on Friday, 10am to 2 am on Saturday, and then 10-6 on Sunday. Atomic Lollipop is an all ages, family friendly event, but there will be more ‘mature’ programming after 9 pm – including saucy panels and Nerdy Burlesque.
So check out the attractions page and the schedule for more specific details. Have an amazing con!
