Official Star Wars Instagram teases new footage
The end of August brings with it a few certainties … fall (and winter) is coming, pumpkin spiced everything will soon be in stores everywhere, and a new Star Wars movie is only three months away.
Since the D23 Expo earlier this month, fans have been anticipating the drop of another Episode VII trailer, and going by the official Star Wars Instagram feed, we might finally be getting our wish.
The content we get here is ever so carefully chosen, with a similar cryptic voiceover to the one we heard in the original teaser from eight months ago, and bits of footage quite reminiscent of previous glimpses. We see a shot of the First Order – who we’ve seen before – from a different and more expansive angle. We also see the continuation of the infamous Kylo Ren footage, crossguard and all, now clearly readying for a classic lightsaber duel with our protagonist and probable Jedi, Finn. The only entirely new footage is a quick close-up on Rey with B-88 just behind her, taking place in a forest setting.
What we’re seeing is deliberately framed out of context, to the point that we’d just be spitballing at trying to put any meaning to it. The most important element of the trailer from where I’m sitting was the face off between Jedi and Sith, and the differences between Kylo and Finn’s weapons of choice. The highly controversial design of Kylo’s lightsaber is written off canonically as being something of a homebrew, evidenced not only in its unusual design and frazzled energy beam, but also in its sound design. The distinction of placing it opposite Finn’s traditional weapon – confirmed to be the very same lightsaber handed down from Anakin to Luke – really goes to highlight the important differences between the two characters.
Naturally a tease like this means that a full trailer is likely to follow soon after, so keep your eyes posted here for further reactions and analysis.
