Rap like a Cobra: New Wordburglar Video
Ever been a fan of G.I. Joe (cartoon, comic, movie or action figures)? What about smart geeky references or Nerdcore hip-hop?
If you missed Wordburglar’s themed album “Escape from Cobra Island” then why not check out the first video: Rap Viper?
I first heard Wordburglar’s “Escape from Cobra Island” at the Nerd Noise Nite on August 24th, 2013. The event was held at Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern it featured over a half dozen acts in various styles, including the Wordburglar, whose performance was an ode to all things Cobra.
Last spring he teased us with a three track ‘single’, then the full twelve track album was released on August 30th. Now Wordburglar has just released the first video for the album. The video is, appropriately, the track “Rap Viper”. Now I don’t know my G.I. Joe lore nearly as well as Geek Hard’s Andrew Young, but this is either an expert use of fun details or one of the best self insertions I’ve ever seen. (Andrew vote’s is for a fabulous Wordburglar creation.)
Both the video and song are full of sly Cobra references including Major Bludd’s poetic inclination, the Tele-Viper’s specialization in communication technology, Croc Master, the (toy) Terror Drome, and used as an important visual in the vid, the non-battery run Boom Box referenced in IDW’s issue G.I.Joe 2 . Of course, Rap Viper’s desire for global sonic domination matches Cobra Commander’s own.
One of the best parts of being a geek is celebrating the things you love. This video and the album it comes from does that in the best way.
