Marvel News from SDCC

Marvel’s Next Big Thing is a huge draw at SDCC and this year the entertainment giant had a lot to tease. This coming year will see some massive changes to the Marvel Universe, and a lot of the studio’s top writers were on hand in San Diego to reveal some of the secrets. Names like Mark Waid, Gerry Duggan, Charles Soule, Sam Humphries, and Dan Slott faced the crowds to reveal the hints to the fates of some of Marvel’s most iconic characters.

We are only a month away from the beginning of The Death of Wolverine, so Charles Soule revealed some of the details of how the story will play out. It seems that without his healing factor, Reed Richards tells Logan that he risks infection with every snikt. Each issue will have a different feeling and be reminiscent of a different genre, reflecting different periods of Logan’s life. Nick Lowe said that as an editor, the final issue was unusually difficult to read and brought a tear to his eye.

Soule also revealed that he is working with artist Salvador Larroca on a miniseries called Death of Wolverine: The Weapon X Program that will begin in November. Its story will address Wolverine’s death directly and will introduce new characters as Soule explores some of the positives and negatives of the super soldier program that created Wolverine. Another spin-off coming out of Death of Wolverine is a pair up of an older Captain America with Deadpool. The creative team of Gerry Duggan and Scott Collins will link this odd couple’s antics to Wolverine’s end as well as some of the Captain’s best known stories.

The other big Marvel event this summer is Original Sin, and the death of the Watcher is bound to cause a stir in the Marvel Universe. Sam Humphries talked about some of the challenges that Peter Quill will face in his new solo series Legendary Star-Lord. Humphries talked about Quill’s soft-heartedness, hinting at the direction that the series will move. He also revealed that the fourth issue will see Thanos appear with some unfinished business in the wake of Original Sin. Peter and Thanos have never really gotten along so who knows what kind of trouble unaired secrets could cause.

Another big announcement was the news that Mark Waid is launching S.H.I.E.L.D. as comic that will feature characters like Phil Coulson and his team from televisions Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The series will fit into Marvel continuity and follow the team as they look for new members and team up with all kinds of Marvel heroes in a bunch of one shot stories.

Waid also gave some information about his run on Daredevil. Matt Murdock is not immune to the secrets revealed in Original Sin and the death of the Watcher will affect him in a very real way. He will meet misfortune, and after a peek at the Watcher’s secrets, he will ask his mother the true reason she left his father.
