Marvel Announces New Female Thor!
Marvel has just announced that this fall, Thor will be a woman. In the soon-to-be relaunched ongoing series helmed by writer Jason Aaron (who will be continuing his run) and being joined by artist Russell Dauterman, the brand-new female Thor will put a new spin on the classic character.
“This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before,” Aaron said.
Although this is not the first time that we’ve seen a gender-bent Thor (having been portrayed that way in the Alex Ross created Universe X series) it is the first time we are seeing it in the 616 Universe, however details seem to suggest that this is not the Odinson himself but a new character taking up the mantle and hammer of Marvel’s favourite thunder god.
“The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription,” says Marvel editor Wil Moss.
Legacy characters aren’t a new thing (heck, within the context of Thor, his role has been taken up before by Thunderstrike, Beta Ray Bill, a frog… ) but this is one of the few instances where a major character is being replaced by the opposite gender which feels in-line with Marvel’s recent push to appeal to more female readers including the current and wonderful Ms.Marvel and She Hulk titles.
I, for one, look forward to seeing the direction that this book takes. What do you think of the new female Thor? Let us know in the comments below!
This should interesting, especially considering the massive popularity of the movies.
