Marvel Announces the New Avengers Lineup

As the countdown to the last days of the Marvel universe continues, Marvel keeps teasing what the Battleworld landscape will look like. In the wake of announcements about the titles that will wrap up and the new stories that will take their place, Marvel has just given Wired an exclusive look at the new Avengers lineup which will debut on Free Comic Book Day. Predictably, Miles Morales will be joining the Avengers and working alongside Sam Wilson as Captain America, female Thor, Iron Man, Kamala Khan as Ms. Marvel, Sam Alexander as Nova, and Vision. The team is well overdue for this injection of young blood; Miles, Kamala and Sam Alexander are teenagers and are likely to bring an element of humor to the title. It’s also nice to see the return of Vision as a major character. I’m sure this is a move to maintain continuity between the comic and cinematic universes; Vision will certainly be much more recognizable and possibly even a fan favourite character after this summer’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Of course the real news here is the transition that Miles is making from the Ultimate universe and into Battleworld. Of course he’s a well-loved character in a universe that is quickly loosing readership, the Ultimate universe has run its course and now fans don’t have to worry about the final incursion between it and universe 616, we know that pats of the Ultimate universe will survive. Secret Wars is going to mark huge changes to the Marvel universe, the Avengers roster is minor compared to the other changes we’re going to see. Johnny Storm will join the Inhumans, past universes like Age of Apocalypse and 1602 will find permanent homes in continuity, all of Marvel will be turned upside down. With every new piece of information, Marvel makes the wait for May that much more difficult.
