Listen To: Pussy Riot!

By now, you’ve probably heard of the Russian feminist punk band, Pussy Riot and if you haven’t, WAKE THE F!?K UP! Pussy Riot are a performance art group responsible for trying to bring down the corrupt Russian government through illegal, guerilla performances that have made headlines all over the world. The band formed last year in response to Vladimir Putin’s announcement that he would be running – again, for president and staged their final, high profile performance at Moscow’s Christ the Savior Church on February 21, 2012 right before the election that saw Putin’s return to power. It was after this performance, which included a “punk prayer” that the band was arrested. Two of the women have fled Russia, and three were sentenced to two years in prison while the rest of us shake our heads over the state of free speech.

But Pussy Riot also rock. Check out their new song, ‘Putin Fires Up The Lights’, then head over to Free Pussy Riot! and take action through Amnesty International to find out more about a band who can be credited for giving a voice to basic human rights under threat in Russia.
