The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is Returning to the Big Screen

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie ranks with the likes of Daredevil and Batman & Robin as one of the worst comic book adaptations of all time. Happily for fans of the acclaimed series by Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill, Fox is giving it another shot. The comics brought together a number of literary figures including Mina Harker, Allan Quartermain, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Captain Nemo to battle literary threats in a steampunk version of Victorian England. The 2003 adaptation was panned by comics and film fans alike for its cardboard characters and nonsensical plot, so hopefully this new attempt will learn from the earlier film’s mistakes.

Information is scarce since the project is still in the early stages, but Ira Napoliello (whose only imdb credit is producing Mr. Popper’s Penguins) and Matt Reilly are listed as heading the project. We don’t know much else about it at this point, so fans, start your speculating!

It looks like this is unrelated to the TV series that Fox commissioned to be helmed by Michael Green (of Green Lantern notoriety) so we can all rest easy. Hopefully this version will stay truer to the plot and spirit of the comics, but it’s hard to say anything conclusively at this point. And hey, even if it sucks, at least we still have Penny Dreadful.
