KOTOR 2 gets official update after 10 years
Fans of Obsidian’s 2004 release, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, are among the most dedicated fanbases out there, and this week their patience was finally rewarded.
Over ten years after it launched, the PC version of KOTOR 2 received its latest official update.
The cult classic game received a significant upgrade, including maximum functionality with Steam, such as Achievements, Cloud access and full support for SteamOS. Further modernizing the game, it now supports up to 4K and 5K resolutions, widescreen formatting, and gamepad compatibility. The game can now also be played on both Mac and Linux platforms as well.
Perhaps most exciting of all is the access to Steam Workshop, which gives players easy access to a fan-created mod for the game that restores several hours of cut content from the original game, as well as fixing over 500 bugs that came with the original release. While the unofficial patch itself has been available online since 2012, combined with the wealth of other recent releases fans are finally able to get the full intended experience so many years later.
Even in its incomplete state, many have argued that the follow-up to BioWare’s multi-award winning Knights of the Old Republic was in fact superior to its predecessor. The Sith Lords was infamously rushed out only a year after KOTOR, handed off to a different developer who did what they could under the pressure of Lucasarts to meet a tight deadline. Lead Game Designer Chris Avellone has since gone on record as saying the game was released unfinished, with Obsidian co-founder Feargus Urquhart adding that the team ended up having to cut their projected release date down by almost an entire year to appease the pressure they had received during the game’s development.
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords is available now on Steam and through Apple’s App Store, on sale until July 28th for 25% off.
