Kids reunite for “Brain Candy”

Anyone remember The Kids in the Hall? You know, those five crazy guys from Canada who had a hit show produced by Saturday Night Live furor Lorne Michaels. The troupe, which consists of Scott Thompson, Dave Foley, Mark McKinney, Bruce McCulloch and Kevin McDonald formed in 1984, and produced five seasons of classic Canadian comedy on CBC. There were countless classic sketches including Cabbage Head, The Chicken Lady, Gavin and the Two Geralds just to name a few. Also, who could forget the HEADCRUSHER!? Totally hilarious.

Well after the show ended, the group made a movie called Brain Candy which film critic Roger Ebert described as “Awful – terrible – dreadful – stupid – idiotic – unfunny – laboured –  forced – painful – bad.” though it has developed a major cult following over the years. Well the Kids are back, and they will be performing a table reading of the classic 1996 script.

The event is taking place tonight (Tuesday March 11) at Queen Elizabeth theater in Toronto as part of Sketch Festival, a select group of top sketch comedy troupes from around the country. In addition, there will be a screening of the movie’s alternate ending as well as a performance of the the film’s soundtrack (which featured bands of that era like Pavement, Yo La Tengo and They Might Be Giants) by original composer Craig Northey (of the Odds) who will be joined by friends from Sloan as well as other surprise guests. If that wasn’t enough, they have a very special narrator coming to perform with them, though they will not tell us who it is.

For now, this is only scheduled as a one off performance, though it sounds like they are open to possibilities of more. It is fantastic to see the Kids active again, and who knows, maybe they’ll throw together some new television episodes, though they have leaned towards live performances with their tours the last bunch of years.
