Kickstarter- Cyan’s Obduction

You guys remember Myst, right? Of course you do. Because I’ve written about it before.

Well, it seems that Cyan Worlds, the creators of Myst, have decided to stick their big toe into the adventure game pool once again. We won’t be seeing a return to Myst Island this time, though. Instead, Cyan Worlds is undertaking perhaps one of their most ambitious projects yet. It’s called Obduction, and it promises to bring back the immersive and exploratory nature of its predecessors while also taking advantage of the advances made in gaming over the last few years.

Of course, these things cost money.  And Cyan Worlds can’t do it all by their lonesome. So they currently have a Kickstarter going to raise the funds necessary to make their game. Despite my love of all things Myst, I actually was only aware of the Kickstarter about a week ago. It’s got four days left and they still need to reach their base funding! If you have any spare cash and love adventure games, I would highly recommend contributing!

From the looks of it, the game will start with you getting abducted and whisked across the universe to a strange and alien world (which sounds a bit familiar). After that? It’s a mystery. You are left to explore and create your own story in a non-linear playground of insanity, or at least that’s what I gathered from reading the descriptions.

Seriously, I’m very excited about this. From what I’ve seen of the videos and art, this game looks pretty fantastic. It doesn’t look like they’re simply trying to recreate their old Myst titles. It looks like they’re trying new things as well and I’m confident Cyan can deliver on an awesome gaming experience. As they say in their Kickstarter explanation, Cyan Worlds started as and continues to be an independent studio and they want to keep it that way. I’m hoping that will remain true.

Sure, I’m biased. Myst and adventure gaming in general have always been my first loves and will continue to be so until some pesky child demands more of it. But I also have a pretty good eye for awesome projects. And I’m hoping to see this one come to fruition.
