HUZZAH! Knights of Badassdom is finally set to be released!
In a world… Within our world… They’d created a world… Unlike any other world…”
It was those words that whipped the halls of Comic Con into a frenzy way back in 2011 when director Joe Lynch first revealed footage from Knights of Badassdom to the masses. It was the combination of LARPing, balls to the wall horror, and a who’s who of current genre actors that made Knights the talk of the con. Seriously, a LARPing horror moving starring Peter Dinklage, Ryan Kwanten, and Summer Glau, it’s a perfect storm of geek.
However in the months, and then years, to follow, Knights of Badassdom was stuck in development hell. All the Con buzz couldn’t save Joe Lynch’s vision, and over time the film was taken from him by the production company, which resulted in a very public dispute that put the entire film’s release in jeopardy.
According to www.badassdom.com, the movie has been taken away from Lynch and given a different edit, which would seem to violate the contract signed by Lynch and the production company. Wade Bradley, the CEO of IndieVest, the production company for KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM, is planning to screen the new edit this week. What once was a 90+ minute movie under Lynch’s cut has become a truncated 70 minute version, and thus far Bradley has refused to allow Lynch to finish his work and edit the movie to his vision. Bradley has claimed that the movie went vastly overbudget (although he approved every spending invoice) and, if the anonymous writer of the Badassdom site is accurate, removed members of IndieVest who hepled promote and support Lynch’s version of the film.
Well, it’s been over a year now since this happened and potential fans of the film had all but given up, that is until this tweet went out earlier today:
BREAKING: eOne acquires KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM!
— Jeff Sneider (@TheInSneider) July 25, 2013
Which was quickly followed up by this report from Deadline.com.
Entertainment One has acquired North American distribution rights to the long-in-the-can film Knights Of Badassdom, which stars Game Of Thrones‘ Peter Dinklage, Ryan Kwanten, Steve Zahn and Summer Glau. The indie fantasy comedy revolves around a group of live-action role players who mistakenly conjure up a demon from Hell and must deal with the consequences. EOne plans a day-and-date U.S. release in theaters and on VOD. The Joe Lynch-directed pic, written by Kevin Dreyfuss and Matt Wall, hit Comic-Con with its geek-cred cast in 2011 (Community‘s Danny Pudi, Revenge‘s Margarita Levieva and Josh Molina also co-star). Dreyfuss, Wall and IndieVest Pictures’ Mark Burton produced. Daniel J. Heffner, Ketura Krestin, Rizwan Virk, Rich Cowan and Mike Elizalde executive produced. The deal was negotiated on behalf of IndieVest by Wade Bradley and for eOne by VP Worldwide Acquisitions Sejin Croninger.
Now the one thing we still don’t know is if eOne will be releasing the full cut of the film, or the drastically cut version. We’ve got our fingers crossed that we’ll be seeing the entire film in all it’s gory glory, but time will tell. Stay tuned to G33KPR0N for more updates, including a release date!
