Having A Horrible Time with the Browncoats

On Saturday night, the Toronto Browncoats took over the lower floor of a Firkin pub and screened Doctor Horrible. This event was the final item on the Can’t Stop the Serenity Toronto committee’s calendar year.

While there was a draw and some merchandise for sale, this event focused more on fun than fundraising.  Several people created their interpretation of Wonderflonium using such items as pipe-cleaners, egg cartons, cups, and felt squares.  The winner had pre-prepared his Wonderflonium, which exploded in streamers “when bounced”.

In keeping with the low key approach, instead of a costume contest, there was a geeky t-shirt contest. The winner, whose shirt showed Angry Birds wearing a cunning hat, was chosen by applause.

The great thing about a sports bar is the number of televisions, and the fact that no matter where you sit, you can see at least three screens. That’s especially shiny when ALL the screens showed Dr. Horrible’s adventures, with subtitles to allow even the newest fan to sing… –a-long.

And who was this audience? Some people had driven hours to attend, others were from the neighbourhood. Some had come to Browncoat events each of the nine years that Toronto has participated in Can’t Stop the Serenity‘s global charity drive for Equality Now. This is an NGO that educates, advocates, and assists with women’s rights around the globe. Other participants had seen the event listed on reddit and came out for the first time.

One refrain (no not Laundry Day) which was heard from all who attended is how much they are looking forward to next year’s events.  Guess no one had too Horrible a time!
