Grumpy Cat Comic Book in the Works!
For those of you bemoaning the fact that comic books don’t have enough strong female protagonists, we’re about to get a brand-new one, albeit in an unconventional, feline form: internet kitty Grumpy Cat will star in her own upcoming comic book
Announced through the official Facebook and Twitter pages for Grumpy this week, the crabby cat author, Friskies spokescat and Lifetime movie starlet is moving into the realm of comic books this summer and fall with a mini-series being distributed by Dynamite comic publisher.
Grumpy, also known by her birth name Tardar Sauce, doesn’t look to be going on her misadventures alone. The cover art for the first issue reveals that the furry celebrity’s biological brother, Pokey, will co-star in the series, giving him a chance at the limelight at last. Hopefully the attention won’t go to his head!
While some argue that the Grumpy Cat phenomena has overstayed its welcome, it’s not hard to see why her scowling image has outlived so many other memes. Being a cat makes her the perfect celebrity. She’s accessible to all ages, genders, races, religions, shapes and sizes. Nobody can scrutinize what she wears on the red carpet or ask her silly sexist questions. She can’t say ignorant or offensive things in front of the media. There’s no need for tired publicity stunts like leaking personal photos or trying to “break the internet” to keep herself in the news. Are you ever going to see upstart journalists trying to stir the pot by asking her whether she’s a feminist? No, because she’s a freaking cat. And besides, she’s sooooooooo cuuuuuuuuuuute.
The Misadventures of Grumpy Cat (And Pokey!) is set to have preview pages at San Diego Comic Con in July.
