Goosebumps Movie Coming in 2016
Goosebumps – one of the all time most successful horror book series’ for kids. If you grew up in the nineties, you definitely owned one or more of the 62 volume series, which sold over 300 million copies. The spin off television show was also a big hit and lasted four seasons, churning out seventy-two episodes of family friendly horror programming. The original book series ended in 1997, with a few spin off series surfacing and still being released today. But, Goosebumps has a big fan in actor Jack Black, who will be bringing the series to the big screen in 2016.
Many questions loom. How are they going to do this? Are they basing the plot on stories from the original series? Will it still be a family-friendly endeavour, or will it be scarier? It may be too early to say, but as an avid reader of Goosebumps, I can say that many classics such as “Say Cheese and Die”, “Stay out of the Basement”, “The Abominable Snowman of Pasedena”, my personal favorite “Piano Lessons can be Murder” and “The Girl who Cried Monster” can serve as great source material, thanks to author R.L. Stine.
My prediction is that they will make it a trilogy of short stories, much like flicks such as “The Twilight Zone Movie”, “Nightmares”, “Tales from the Hood” and “Tales from the Darkside”, honing in on the three or four best stories. Or maybe they will go the “Tales from the Crypt” route, just picking one story and eventually doing several different Goosebumps flicks. Regardless of the format, I am pleased that Goosebumps will be re-introduced to a generation that would only know about the series if older brothers and sisters had the old books lying around.
I remember going to the school book fair and ALWAYS getting the newest edition, and I’m sure many others do too. In any case, it’ll be nice to see R.L. Stine finally represented on the big screen, an event that has been a long time coming.
