FarCry 3 (or how I developed a crush on Vaas)

Since school is out, and work is winding down for some, what better way to embrace this cold holiday season with a vacation to the tropics. I bet they even offer sky diving.

Now, if what I just said made you uneasy, you already know where the fun is at. If not, well… I’m about to fill you in.

FarCry 3 is the sequel to the previous game but unlike some games, you don’t really HAVE to play the previous FarCry titles. Actually, save yourself the trouble and jus’t don’t play them (FarCry was just a little ridiculous in plot and FarCry 2 had you constantly getting Malaria, inconvenient I know.)

Plot

It’s tricky to go into detail regarding the plot without massive spoilers, so I will keep this brief. You become Jason Brody, a debatably un-likeable guy on vacation with his brother, girlfriend, and a handful of other friends. They are tempted by an invitation to a skydiving trip to an unmarked island. This ends in disaster for Jason and his pals when they are captured by human traffickers and are to be sold into slavery. Jason’s brother dies in the beginning of the game, no thanks to Jason, as the two of them manage to break away from the slave camp. This is unfortunately short lived when Jason stops not far from the camp to read a map, and his brother gets shot. With a little help from an island resident named Dennis, Jason starts his journey into becoming an island warrior.

From this point forward Jason goes on to rescue the remainder of his friends from the island, and is faced with many choices. The story is a very interesting exploration of the fine thread between morality and immorality, sanity and insanity, and human behavior.

To continue would mean spoilers, and I’m not about to do that to you.

Gameplay

The entire story contains 38 guided missions, that truly flesh out your island experience and gradually familiarize you with the questionable characters living on this island. You can get through the entire story in approximately 10 hours, but it really is in your best interest to take your time. There is so much crammed on to the island, delivered through an intense and captivating storyline, you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t take your time.

There are also 2 multiplayer modes available. There is a four player co-op mission (featuring characters unrelated to the main campaign’s plot), and competitive multiplayer mode (set in arenas and not open-world). The multiplayer options are nice to have but are very underwhelming compared to the solo campaign.

FarCry 3 is an incredibly balanced game and is one of the top open-world shooters available, and if you have not already experienced this game I suggest you do so. Everything about this game makes up for the incredibly annoying character that is Jason’s girlfriend, plus the inclusion of Vaas Montenegro has me loving this game.

*swoon*
