The Expanded Universe of Star Wars Survives!
In the wake of the massive culling of the expanded universe and in the shadow of the upcoming films Star Wars fans have remained in a very strange and somewhat desolate place, unsure of what the future holds for them.
It comes as no surprise, in such a situation, that the fantasy flight miniatures game Star Wars X-Wing is climbing up the charts. ICv2 listed it as the number two retailing (non-collectable) miniatures game last fall only trailing behind the dynasty that is Warhammer 40,000.
The models have offered an easy introduction for fans by being well painted and scaled along with the focus on small skirmish battles and a strong system. However; their recent news has created a new hope (I’m so sorry for that one) in what was once considered a desolate part of the fandom.
With the recent announcement Fantasy Fight has taken a major cruiser from beyond the spectrum of the films. That of the Outrider, piloted by Dash Rendar of the Shadows of the Empire storyline and with the Decimator model dropped the name of one of the most iconic figures of the expanded universe: Mara Jade.
With this new wave fans have received the rare privilege of the possibility of the return of many famous faces from the expanded universe of Star Wars. Also, a lot of the not so famous (or even well-liked) faces may make a return but that’s the dice roll for you to make with that one. With this new wave there’s a strong implication of a much larger potential library for the X-Wing game then what the films simply allow.
And maybe… maybe… one day we’ll get a Death Star.
Fingers crossed on that one.
