Debi Goes Cut Throat at Fan Expo (Catelyn Stark Cosplay)
After coming to the conclusion that my daughter just wasn’t going to get a ticket for Fan Expo, lo and behold, we managed to get her a Sunday pass! Here’s the problem though, she wanted to go as Arya Stark and insisted I go as Catelyn. Well, dammit! I’d already been working on my Doctor Who Clockwork Droid costume and hadn’t even thought of doing anything else!
So the mad rush begins to get everything done which included a tunic for her made out of individual strips that had to be hand sewn together. For me? Well, I had to make an ENTIRE dress!! Ya, no biggie. Really. It’s not like I haven’t been sleeping already, I’ll just forfeit sleep for the rest of the month. No really, it’s cool. O_o
It occurs to me in the midst of the mad rush to get everything organized and STILL finish my Clockwork Droid, that it would be super cool to have makeup done so I have a slit throat. Would it be a spoiler for fans of Game of Thrones? DUDE, it’s been over two months since the season 3 finale. Get yourself caught up already!!
While scoping out Fan Expo on Friday, I came across Sinister Rouge Make-up FX Studio in the Rue Morgue section. Jen and Melis were more than happy to help me partially behead myself on Sunday morning.
We arrive on Sunday morning and watch Jen and another assistant work on a girl who had the misfortune of a very painful looking shark attack, complete with giant shark bite, leg lesions and sticky sand. The model was enjoying herself and hammed in her bikini for all the onlookers who just had to get a shot of this gruesome event.
Melis sat me down and went to work. She started with medical-grade silicone and sculpted a great neck slash. Silicone is one of the pricier sculpting mediums, but it has better elasticity and beats using tissue paper which is messy. Next she used a toothbrush to flick watered-down alcohol-based foundation onto the wound. She tells me this is the best way to match it to my skin tone instead of sponging it on and damaging it. The alcohol will dissipate and you won’t even be able to tell the difference between my skin and the silicone!
Now onto the gooey parts. I forgot to get the name of what she used to fill the wound with, but it freaked me out a little (which is the reason I’ll use for forgetting the info) It looked like really dark red currant jelly. Funny enough, I remember getting some on my fingers later and accidentally (ya, it was an ACCIDENT) licking some of it and it kinda tasted like red currant jelly!
Lastly, she squeezed some fake blood along the length of the wound and let it run down a bit. She was a little worried about hitting my costume, but I assured her it wasn’t a problem. She also mentioned that it was all water soluble, so it would come out in the wash. BONUS!!
Melis did a great job, both for me and the poor unfortunate girl that was needlessly attacked by a vicious shark… or maybe it was a Sharknado? The wounds looked pretty bad…
