Deadpool Trailer is Here! Is if February Yet?
No character has been wronged as severely as Deadpool. The merc with a mouth was badly mistreated in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, when his mouth was inexplicably sewn shut causing a resounding cry of protest. Fortunately, the official trailer for his upcoming movie looks like the Deadpool we know and love. Ryan Reynolds has gotten a lot of grief for his involvement in superhero franchises, first his embarrassing appearance as Wade Wilson, then his humiliating turn as Green Lantern, but when word got out that he was campaigning for an R rating for Deadpool, I must admit, I breathed a sigh of relief. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, or like so many you desperately need to watch it again, you can check it out above.
Make a note, there are two versions of the trailer, and only one shows promise. The red band trailer (so named because of the red screen that warns an audience of the trailer’s restricted content) shows Deadpool as he was meant to be. He is foul-mouthed, crass, violent, and just as insane as anyone could hope. While there is a suspicious lack of Bea Arthur mentions or chimichangas in the trailer (two quintessential Deadpool obsessions) there is an abundance of self-awareness. We’ll have to wait until the movie’s release to find out if Deadpool breaks the fourth wall; we have to hope that he does. What would a Deadpool movie be without him speaking directly to the audience? He would be far less entertaining without his snide self-deprecation; in fact, the best part of the trailer is Reynold’s digs at his gig as the Green Lantern.
The green band version of the trailer (which is suitable for all audiences), gives a horrifying look at what a PG13 version of the movie would have looked like, and realizes my worst fears. There was always the looming threat of Deadpool’s solo movie being too accessible and suffering because Fox Studio’s decided to play it safe. Since we know that the red band is out there, let’s push all of this family friendly nonsense aside and focus on the awesomeness that is the red band trailer. While the red band trailer, shines a light at the end of Deadpool’s dark cinematic tunnel, it’s still a long wait until the movie’s release in February of 2016!
