Community’s Doctor Who Parody Inspector Spacetime to Become a Web Series

Community and Doctor Who fans rejoice! Inspector Spacetime, the Doctor Who parody on Community is becoming a reality!

Travis Richey, the actor who plays Inspector Spacetime on Community was inspired by his role and announced yesterday at the Gallifrey One Doctor Who Convention that he will be independently(with the help of fans!) producing a 6-episode web series with the help of fans and a Kickstarter account.

Richey, experienced in the world of web series and huge Community/Doctor Who fan, was inspired by his role and immediately wrote a script for Inspector Spacetime. When the pitch failed to get a response from the guys upstairs, Richey decided to go forward anyway. The series is unaffiliated with NBC, Community and Dan Harmon, and it doesn’t look like  Richey will be able to get the Community cast to take part, but if Danny Pudi and Donald Glover (Troy and Abed) were to appear … a girl can dream.

Charlie Anders from Io9 was at the Gallifrey One panel where the project was announced and reported the key details of the series, and a bit about the dramatic reading of the first episode:

…there was a dramatic reading of the first webisode, in which the Inspector and Constable Reginald visit the planet [Second New Old Earth 7], where they meet the [Blorgons], vanquish them with the Inspector’s “[optic pocketknife],” and then run into a deserted warehouse where they get trapped. Apparently, later in the episode we’ll get to meet the Inspector’s arch-nemesis. The panel also included a slideshow explaining the long line of actors who played the Inspector: Christopher Lee in the 1960s, Stephen Fry in the 1980s, and Steve Carell in the 1990s TV movie.

Further clarifications from Richey to I09 include the reveal of Inspector Spacetime’s arch-nemesis, Boyish the Extraordinary.   (Source: I09)

I love how Community inspires so much love and creativity from its fans. I’m thrilled to see Inspector Spacetime come to life in his own series! It’s so incredibly in the spirit of Community that a few seconds of airtime over a few episode, something that is really just a recurring gag has resonated so much with fans of the show that it’s taken on a life and mini-fandom of its own. It really speaks to the value of the show (*poke poke* NBC, how about a return date!)

How do you feel about the independent Inspector Spacetime offshoot?
