This Brand New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Trailer is All Kinds of Amazing
Minutes ago Michael Bay and company dropped a brand new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trailer on YouTube. After the lukewarm reception of the first trailer, fans have been pretty vocal about the film franchise; most notably how they feel that this incarnation of the Turtles is a testament to all that is wrong with Hollywood.
Well, thankfully this new trailer goes a long way to silence most of those criticisms. We finally get a good look at the Turtles in action, and man can they move. Previously all we had seen was a very brief sequence of Donatello launching Raphael into a truck, and while it was impressive, a lot of fans were left wondering what the Turtles would look like in combat. While the design of the turtles is still up for debate, the action beats in the trailer go a long way to show fans that these Turtles definitely move like ninjas.
The trailer also take a jab at the initial fan reaction to the news that the mutagenic ooze might have alien origins, “So they’re aliens?” “No, that’s stupid, they’re turtles”. This coupled with some amusing banter from Mikey means that there’s a good chance the lighthearted tone of the cartoon show is still present.
We’ve also got our first look at Splinter, and whatever criticisms fans may have about turtle lips, they can’t argue the fact that Splinter looks absolutely perfect.
Of course the biggest reveal in the trailer was of Shredder, and his giant mech suit. While I personally love William Fichtner as an actor, I’m still not sold on him as a badass samurai, I am however sold on the suit, which is leaps and bounds better than the “Super Shredder” that we last saw in the 2nd live-action Turtles film.
Of course we can’t ignore the elephant in the room that is Megan Fox. While the first trailer made it seem like she was the focal point of the film, this second trailer makes it clear that her role isn’t as the damsel in distress, but rather as the audience surrogate. Now we can argue all day about whether that role is needed or not, but for the most part that is the role April O’Neil has played throughout the various incarnations of the Turtles.
Speaking of the various incarnations, it’s good to remember that over the years there have been several different versions of the Turtles, including the original ultra-gritty Eastman+Laird comics, and the ultra-campy cartoon series that launched their popularity. With fans of the Turtles partial to different versions of them, it’s going to be tough to blend every version together
With an August 8th release date, the end of summer is beginning to look like the hottest month for the box office. However with Guardians of the Galaxy releasing the week before, there’s a strong chance that the Turtles may not claim the box office title their first week out. With 6 weeks to go, the marketing is going to kick into overdrive, so expect to see more Turtles news as we approach the release date.
