Blizzard Honours Robin Williams
It’s hard to say goodbye. The world is beginning to heal from the loss of Robin Williams. It takes time to accept and understand the emotions we’ve all been through. It may be sad to lose someone so great, but the memories they leave behind are incredible, and he left us with many. He had such an impact on us, he has inspired some beautiful art, like Craig on the Miiverse forums.
There was a petition circulating online asking Blizzard to put in a tribute for Robin Williams for World of Warcraft. He was an avid gamer. He even built his own computers to play MMO’s. He was such a huge gamer, that he named his daughter Zelda. It means he also walked on the roads of Azeroth with us, when he played World of Warcraft.
Blizzard heard the call, and they answered.
In the latest beta update for Warlords of Draenor, the folks at Wowhead datamined some interesting facts. There is a genie model named Robin. Check out AdriaCraft’s video if you want to see the full experience. Just off the coast of Talador, there’s a small island, with a bunch of items. One is a cracked egg, with mechanical equipment inside it. This is an homage to Mork & Mindy, the spin off show that launched Robin Williams career. There is also the famed genie lamp. If you click on it, Robin appears quoting a line from Aladdin. It gets vague after that. There are toys strewn about the area, a possible reference to Toys. There is the chance for more tribute to Williams. Wowhead also data mined info about a human female named Robin, a potential nod to Mrs. Doubtfire; and a human male in suspenders, which could be Mork.
Blizzard deserves a big hand for this. They responded quickly, and appropriately for a man who touched so many lives. It remains to be seen if the locations, or the tributes will end up in the same place at release. It is known, however, that fans of Robin Williams will be making pilgrimages to find them.
