Apple Bans Sex Criminals
Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky’s new series “Sex Criminals” is no stranger to controversy. Their Toronto launch of their first issue at a local sex club featured Zdarsky reading erotic poetry in a Garfield costume while Fraction bravely had his nipples pierced as hundreds of curious comic fans crowded the stage (Sunny covered the event in detail).
The series, which just released its second issue last Wednesday and is already on a second printing of the premiere issue, features two lovers who discover that they can stop time with their orgasms. Which they take advantage of to rob banks and cause chaos.
Despite the scandalous nature of the plot, it is at times a heartbreakingly honest story that deals with the complexities and awkwardness of love and sex. And it’s crazily funny.
Despite allowing the first issue of Sex Criminals to be distributed through the comiXology app, Apple has recently decided that the second issue of the series is too inappropriate for viewers to access, deeming it ‘objectionable content’.
Image Comics commented on the hypocrisy of Apple, pointing out that the second issue is still available through the web and android versions of comixology, and even Apple’s own iBookstore.
If you really want to see what all the fuss is about, you can read the first issue of Sex Criminals online (free for a limited time) on comiXology: http://www.comixology.com/Sex-Criminals-1/digital-comic/46453
And remember to ask your local comic book store to add the series to your pull file!
