A G33K’S Guide To NXNE: Wednesday
If Record Store Day is like Christmas for music geeks, NXNE is our Birthday (because everyone spends at least a week celebrating like I do, no?). NXNE is a bit of a magical time in Toronto; this year from June 11-17 bars serve until 4am, the eyesore that is Yonge Dundas Square turns into a massive concert venue and over 750 bands will take 40+ stages downtown. But whether you run around trying to catch bands like Pokémon cards or plant yourself at one venue you need to know what’s up. So here’s where I come in: keep reading to cut through the chaos and find out just how GEEKPR0N plans to survive this week, and with all the 4am last calls you’d better wish us luck.
First off, I’m going to assume you already have passes/wristbands/whatever. No? Then get your ass over to www.nxne.com to get sorted. Got them? Good, now let’s see where the GEEKPR0N crew will be this week.
NXNE officially began on Monday with interactive conferences and film screenings, but the music portion really kicks off on Wednesday, so that’s where we’re gonna start:
WEDNESDAY JUNE 13
No Use For A Name @ Yonge Dundas Square (7pm)
Good Riddance @ Yonge Dundas Square (8pm)
Bad Religion @ Yonge Dundas Square (9pm)
TOMBOYFRIEND @ The Boat (10pm)
Led by Toronto poet-songwriter Ryan Kamstra, this theatrical, politically charged glam-rock band spins tales about androgyny, the wealth divide, romantic love and much more à la Of Montreal and Roxy Music.
The Cold Warps @ Parts&Labour (11pm)
Brilliant AM radio power-pop poured through fuzz and played faster and louder, it’s Joey Ramone beating Paul McCartney over the head with songs about teenage apathy, summer love and science fiction.
Teenanger @ The Garrison (12am)
Razor sharp teen-punk aficionados Teenanger have been sharpening their aural machete into a sound now somehow all their own in a city full of the stuff whilst still wearing their impeccable influences on their jean jackets.
Where will YOU be headed?
