Coming Soon: Unplugged Expo 5.0!
Do you still have the itch for cons even with the summer wrapped up? Then we’ve got good news for you. Coming at you this October is Unplugged Expo.
It’s hard to deny how dramatically the convention bubble grew over the past few years. During its peak, even a humble community like Southern Ontario saw cons practically every other week! But Unplugged endured, and this year she’s celebrating her 5th anniversary.
Founded in 2012 with the mission of being different, this year’s con looks to deliver. The upcoming con will be brimming with exciting events and guests.
If you’re a Potterhead, be sure to treat yourself to the featured Room of Requirement, with fun HP-related shenanigans like the Sorting Hat, trivia, and Every Flavour Bean-tasting. Just in case you get an earwax-flavoured jellybean, be sure cleanse your palate at the ‘Leaky Cauldron’, which provides a delightfully witchy twist on your typical maid cafes at anime cons.
Is nostalgia more your thing? The guests on hand will gladly guide you down memory lane. Of note includes a reunion of Sugar and Carlos from YTV’s The Zone. (Moonies out there know Sugar from Sailor Moon’s English dub, providing ChibiUsa or ‘Mini Moon’ with her voice). Want hail the glory of the Fire Nation? Maybe reminisce about Hook? Maybe, just maybe try to take on a League of Legends champ? Dante Basco will be present as the con’s highlight guest. Guess that means Zuko has reclaimed his honour! (See what we did there?)
Cosplayers have plenty of programming to choose from as well. For your viewing (or competing) pleasure is the standard masquerade competition, a staple at any good con. In addition, Unplugged will also cost the Canadian debut of Masters of Cosplay, a debut competition with 5 amazingly talented Canadian cosplayers. They will debut brand-new, specially-made projects for judging by a team of panelists. Be sure to check out the lovely cosplays created by the attendees.
Of the programming that Unplugged is boasting this year, we have scratched the surface. There is even more to see like Star Trek Improv, Just Dance-offs, and Lip Sync Battles.
All the fun will take place at the Westin Harbor Castle Conference Centre, located in the heart of Toronto’s Harbourfront. Just be sure not to anger the locals if you go out to the Ferry Terminal to catch Pokemon!
Unplugged Expo takes place October 15 & 16, 2016. Admission has an early bird price of $25 until September 30th, or $35 at the door. More details available on the con website.
See you there!
