Xbox Announces Cross Platform Gaming.

There may have been some ground breaking Xbox news that slipped by everyone.

On March 14th, 2016, Chris Charla made a news post on the Xbox News site.  There was a choice bit of information in that post.

Cross-Network Play
First, in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well. This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks.

Eeeeeeeeeeee!

Eeeeeeeeeeee!

Let’s all take a moment to soak that one in.

We all have those friends who play on different consoles.  There’s always that sigh and disappointment when we realize fellow gamers are on different consoles.  If there was only a way we could play Borderlands, or Battlefront, or Destiny with people an digital ocean apart.  It looks like that is going to change.

We saw it start with Rocket League.  Why couldn’t it be possible to play Playstation games with PC games?  If World of Warcraft can have Mac’s and PC’s play on the same servers, why isn’t it possible to have Xbox gamers and Playstation gamers play together?

While nothing is set in stone, and we’re in a holding pattern where we have to see what happens, the future looks full of potential.  It does look like the first domino is starting to teeter.  Once it falls, the others should follow soon.  We could be opening up the potential for console specific games like Tomb Raider and Uncharted going across all platforms, which a lot of gamers are hoping for.

Are you excited for this news?  How many friends do you have on opposite consoles?  What would be the first game you play cross console?  Which cross console game would you buy first?  Let us know in the comments below.

On a side note, I did call this happening a while ago.
