The Incredibles 2 – One Tiny Step Closer

Without question, the best film released in 2004 was The Incredibles.  What other option is there?  Sure, Million Dollar Baby won the Oscar but did it have deadly robots?  Finding Neverland was a sweet story but was it sweeter than the bond between a family of superheroes?  The Aviator had the Spruce Goose but did it have a flying RV?

Come on, admit it. This was awesome.

Now it seems we may finally get a sequel…eventually.  Speaking with npr, Brad Bird, writer and director of the original, mentioned that the story for The Incredibles 2 is “percolating”.  He went on to say, “I’m just starting to write it, so we’ll see what happens.”

What are you waiting for, Brad? Percolate harder!

Back in March of 2014, Disney announced to its shareholders that The Incredibles 2 would happen.  But Bird has always been a bit less certain.  He has stated on numerous occasions that, while he had some interesting ideas, he did not yet have a complete story that would do justice to the original.  Now that he is moving forward on the script, he must feel he has a worthy successor.

If you’re a fan of The Incredibles, this either fills you with excitement or dread…or probably a touch of both.  I think we all want more of the music, books, comics, and movies we love.  But more often than not we are disappointed by sequels and remakes that have cheapened the originals.  No word yet on whether Bird will return to direct the sequel, but his taking on the writing responsibilities again is certainly cause for optimism.

Also no word on whether Bird will reprise his role as Edna Mode.

Bird comes with an impressive portfolio.  In addition to writing and directing the original The Incredibles, Bird also directed Ratatouille for Pixar.  Both films won Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature.

If he can make you root for rats in the kitchen, what can’t Brad Bird do?

Bird also wrote, directed, and worked as an animator on The Iron Giant.  And while The Iron Giant was not exactly a smashing success at the box office, it was critically acclaimed, great fun, and a tribute to classical animation.

Just in case you thought Groot was the first tall, minimalist speaker that Vin Diesel has voiced.

Finally, Bird was also executive consultant on the first 180 episodes of The Simpsons and is credited with the design of everyone’s favourite evil genius, Sideshow Bob.

Ahhhhhh! Sideshow Bob!

I think it is safe to say that the Supers are in good hands.
