The Loss of a Legend, Lou Scheimer

(Los Angeles Times, 1987)

Lou Scheimer, president of Filmation Studios, in 1987.

If you were ever a fan of He-Man, She-Ra or Fat Albert, you were a fan of Lou Scheimer.

Lou Scheimer passed away in his home at the age of 84.  Lou was the president and creator of Filmation, an animation company he started in 1963.

He would go on to animate classic shows in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, that would stand up to the test of time and are still talked about today.  His credentials read off like a holy bible of geekdom.  He and his company were responsible for animated classics like, Star Trek, The New Adventures of Superman, He-Man and The Masters of The Universe, She-Ra: Princess of Power, Bravestar, and many more.

Scheimer had a lock on Saturday morning cartoons and the minds they would they would reach every week.  He took a violent and graphic He-man and turned it into a platform for social consciousness.

His cartoons would be criticized for it’s sloppy appearance and lack of finishing, yet he would go on to win a Day Time Emmy for Star Trek in 1975; and then win again in 1978 for Outstanding Children’s Special with The Fat Albert Christmas Special.

It was his block of cartoons that would go on to appear in today’s generation, through shows like, The Family Guy, Robot Chicken, and The Simpsons.  Scheimer’s influence will forever be on the generation of tomorrow.

Lou Scheimer is survived by his wife Maryanne Wucher and by his children Lane and Erika.  Scheimer passed away two days before his 85th birthday.
