Superman Turns 75 with Bruce Timm and Zack Snyder

Superman celebrated his 75th anniversary this year and to celebrate DC and Warner Bros. have released this brand new short, created by Bruce Timm and Zack Snyder, chronicling all the Man of Steel’s memorable moments in time.

Running at just over 2 minutes, the short is fun, full of nostalgia, and transitions beautifully into each era and milestone in the Big Blue Boyscout’s career, though I note some major factors appear to be missing. The short supposedly “follows Superman through the years” according to the official Youtube description, but there’s no mention of Superman Returns, not a single mention of Batman (though Wonder Woman gets an appearance), no images of Ma and Pa Kent, which is an outrage, and only one image of Lex Luthor, which I totally missed as you can only see the back of him.

Even with large elements of the mythos missing it’s still a fun piece of animation that thankfully looks more influenced by Bruce Timm than Snyder, after all Superman doesn’t snap anyone’s neck or completely destroy Metropolis and kill thousands of people.

It’s also fun trying to catch and name each reference. If you want to test your Superman knowledge DC also released a list of all the annotations in the video so you can see how well you did.

My personal Superman favorites include this guy from the cover of Action Comics #1, who is my favorite background character in comic book history. Heck, is he even a background character? He’s drawn with more focus than Superman himself.

I just love how freaked out he is over seeing Superman lift that car. It makes me laugh every time.

This panel also caught my eye as I so rarely see Supes rocking a Hitler ‘stache.

super stache

Anyone who read comics in the 90’s should feel their heart jump into their throat when Doomsday appears. This is easily the most iconic Superman event in comic book history, and 20 years later it still rocks me to the core.

Oh no, I don’t think we had to bring the electricity-based twin Supermen into this, did we? Did we DC? How about we all just keep pretending that didn’t happen?

electric twins

This guy agrees.

freaking out
