Video Games as Drugs

Almost every gamer can relate to this. Being a religious World of Warcraft player, the points made were fairly debatable. Not only was it a bit of a shock to be the video game equivalent of a coke-head, some of the rationale points listed didn’t seem true – especially that playing WoW was expensive.

I made it my career to explain to people how economically advantageous it was to be a young person (with a social life both in-game and out) and play WoW. The way I saw it, $15 a month for solid entertainment, every Friday, Saturday and Sunday was ideal. You never had to adventure out in the cold to a club, “bottle service” was around $30, there were no lineups, no gun violence, and the bathrooms were always available.

After building up my disbelief, I calculated the approximate amount of money I have spent on this one game. My subscription alone was a few cents shy of $900. That does NOT include the cost of the original game and each expansion (all Collector’s Editions I bought on launch).

The over-compensation didn’t stop just at the WoW comparison, as I went on to try and disprove every single one.

I guess it’s true. It seems I proved that I AM the gaming equivalent of a coke-head.

Which one are you? (Anyone who identifies heavily with the Minecraft image is excused from revealing themselves; as I know everyone will start “sssSSs-ing” quietly behind them).
