Avengers 2 Adds Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver!
It looks like the already massive Marvel movie universe is adding two new super characters to its roster according to Entertainment Weekly! The magazine ran a cover story this week on Iron Man 3 but also dropped the bombshell that Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch will be appearing in Avengers 2, which matches up with rumors that our overlord Joss Whedon himself was spreading around about how he was writing a brother-sister duo into the script. We’re warned the script could change at any time, but as of right now the characters are in it.
This announcement brings up more questions than we’re likely to get answers to any time soon as these will be the first two mutant characters to make it into the Marvel movie universe. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are the children of Magneto, but he’s currently being held tight in the grip of the Fox Studio owned X-Men franchise and can’t show his helmeted head anywhere near Disney’s Avengers. The most interesting aspect of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch is their unique position as basically the only characters that spend an equal amount of time appearing in the X-Men comic books as they do in Avengers stories which makes them technically allowed to appear in both film franchises in theory, with the caveat that they can’t acknowledge one franchise while appearing in the other. Still, this seems like it could be the tentative first step in bringing all these separate franchises together on one awesome big screen some day.
This is an interesting character choice for Disney as the two siblings are most well known for their infamous storyline from Ultimate Avengers where the two are involved in an incestuous relationship with each other, much to Captain America’s horror, and ours.
Let’s just hope Joss thought that story was as gross as the rest of us did and leaves it on the cutting room floor.
Though they have spent most of their careers as good guys and members of the Avengers, both Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch have picked up their father’s habit of flip flopping between good and evil and I’m curious to see whether they play villains or heroes in Avengers 2. Quicksilver’s not too threatening, but Scarlet Witch has been known to change entire universes when her powers get out of control, which is just the kind of threat you would call the Avengers in for. If you’re not sure what Scarlet Witch’s powers are exactly, well, join the club! It’s pretty varied and I welcome you to check out her Wiki page and try to figure it out as I don’t know a single person that can explain her powers properly. Bad luck? Curses? Some kind of math skills? It’s all a little vague and if anyone can explain it in 100 words or less, let us all know in the comments section.
Did not know that about these characters
