10 Panel to Screen Comparisons From Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Obligatory spoiler warning for Captain America: The Winter Soldier in case anyone’s got their mother reading over their shoulder or something and she hasn’t seen it yet.
After several viewings of Captain America: The Winter Soldier I decided to go re-read the comics it was based on even though this was in no way a shot for shot remake of a story like Watchmen or Sin City. That being said, I wasn’t expecting to find too many parallels with the movie. It turns out I was wrong and there were quite a few places where the books perfectly match up with the film. Thus, I have gathered together the ten best moments from The Winter Soldier taken straight from the comic books.
10. Metal Arm Meets Immovable Force
Photoshop in some sound effects and you probably couldn’t tell these two moments apart.
9. Bucky Being Brainwashed
Whether it’s the Russians or Hydra, it seems all brainwashings are created about equal.
* Sebastian Stan fans, you’re welcome.
[Editor’s note: If you look closely at this scene in the film you’ll see Ed Brubaker make a cameo as one of the scientists.]
8. Bucky with the Shield
It’s not quite the same event since Bucky’s still evil in the movie when this happens but this moment was still delicious due to its possible foreshadowing of movie-Bucky taking over as Captain America somewhere down the line as he does in the comic books.
7. Who the hell is Bucky?
Turns out there’s only one question on everyone’s lips during the first meeting of Captain America and the Winter Soldier, no matter what medium it occurs in.
6. Cap Refuses to Fight Bucky
Just like their meeting on the Helicarrier, comic book-Cap wouldn’t fight Bucky and believes he won’t kill him despite the 70 years of brainwashing under Bucky’s belt that says he will.
5. Bucky Visits the Cap Exhibit at the Smithsonian
He’s not quite as inconspicuous about it in the comics as in the movie but he takes the tour nonetheless. Maybe he’s planning to stand around the section devoted to him and offer photo ops to the tourists.
4. Fort Lehigh Makes an Appearance, Both Past and Present
In the movie Cap and Black Widow visit Fort Lehigh, the Army Camp where Cap was trained. In the comics it’s shown to be where Cap first met Bucky and where Bucky runs to when he gets angsty about all the murdering he’s done (which is a substantial amount of murdering to be fair).
3. Cap Watches Old Footage of Him and Bucky
The explosions and death from the comics are slightly less heart-warming than the movie version, but the sentiment’s about the same, Steve’s alone, Bucky’s dead, moving on.
2. Falcon and Cap Discuss What To Do About Bucky
This scene in Cap’s home between him and Falcon is pretty close to the chat they have in the movie after they learn the Winter Soldier’s identity. If only Anthony Mackie had been wearing white and red spandex. If only.
1. Cap Receives the Winter Soldier File
And it’s equally disturbing in both universes, though conveniently English in the comics.
Bonus: Cap Doesn’t Use Parachutes
This one’s a bonus because even though the moment where Cap jumps out of the plane without a parachute is from a comic book, it’s not from The Winter Soldier. This one happened in the Ultimates.
Those are all the moments that caught my eye. Anything I missed? Let me know in the comments.
This is awesome!
“About the author: DIANA…” … Well, Diana, you are awesome! And so is Batman! This is just so great. Thank you for making it!
Why thank you. It was no trouble, really, I don’t find reading comics to be too much of a hardship. Glad you enjoyed.
You should check out Nick Fury vs. S.H.I.E.L.D. too. It’s the comic book series where Arnim Zola uses a computer to replace the S.H.I.E.L.D. higher-ups with LMD “Deltites.” Among the agents replaced? Alexander Pierce, Jasper Sitwell and Jack Rollins, all revealed as HYDRA agents in the film. I’m sure you can find scenes from that, too.
The bit where Cap was escaping from the Triskellion, jumping onto the side of one of the helijets, reminded me of a bit in Civil War where he escaped from the SHIELD helicarrier and caught a ride on one of the jets flying around outside. He even jumped out of a window in the same fashion.
I thought the same.
You forgot about the shot in the belly right at the end of the movie… It makes a reference to the “Death of Captain America” arc after civil war…
That movie is marvelous!
