10 Hallowe’en Picks by Mistress of Horror Rachel Deering

Rachel Deering, curator of some of your favourite nightmares as the editor of In the Dark : a horror comic anthology, presents her top ten choices for chilling your bones this Hallowe’en season! Whether you’re into video games, music, comics, or even good-old fashioned text stories, there is sure to be something to shiver your spine.

In the Dark by Richard Laymon (book)

IntheDark

Rachel’s Rec: “An innocent woman is targeted for a sick and twisted game of raise-the-stakes. How far will she go before her spirit is broken? Not for the squeamish!”

Creepy (Comics)

creepy2

Rachel’s Rec: Warren Publishing produced the greatest horror comic anthology in history. Fantastic black and white terror tales, all nauseatingly narrated by dear old Uncle Creepy!

Twins of Evil (Film)

Twins

Rachel’s Rec: Peter Cushing as a witchfinder, his sexy nieces, Count Karnstein, and more Peter Cushing. This is my absolute favorite Hammer film. There’s also breasts.

The Parlour Trick’s A BLESSED UNREST (soundtrack)

blessedunrest

Rachel’s Rec: Haunting piano and violin pieces will creep you out from the very first note. Heavy stuff. Definitely not a party soundtrack.

Resident Evil 4 (video game)

RE4

Rachels Rec: The parasitic creatures and the cult aspects of this game made me feel like the Resident Evil franchise had switched over from a played out zombie game to something Lovecraftian. The small town setting was perfect.

An American Werewolf in London (Film)

americanwerewolf

Rachel’s Rec: Rick Baker gave us the most fantastic werewolf transformation ever shot on film. As if that wasn’t enough, the rest of the movie is actually pretty genius. As if being a werewolf isn’t bad enough, our main character is also haunted by the people he’s killed, who are constantly trying to convince him to kill himself.

 The Art of Hammer (book)

artofhammer

Rachel’s Rec: An archival book, collecting some of the greatest horror movie posters ever created for the Hammer studio productions. As an added bonus, looking through this book is basically like taking a tour of my house, as many of those posters hang on my walls.

Hammer

Dissection’s REINKAOS (soundtrack)

reinkaos

Rachel’s Rec: A little black metal, a little rock and roll, a lot of Satan, demons, dragons, and magic. This one might not scare you, but it will likely scare a lot of your friends and family.

Severed (comic)

severed

Rachel’s Rec: Scott Snyder can do more than superheroes! This book follows a young boy as he runs away from home, in search of his father. A naive young boy riding the rails all by his lonesome? How could anything bad possibly come from that…

Amnesia: The Dark Descent (game)

amnesia

Rachel’s Rec: Absolutely terrifying. You can’t fight the awful things hunting you. You can only hide. And pray they don’t find you. And go insane.
