The 10 Best Moments of Comic Con 2014

While some of us weren’t able to attend San Diego Comic Con this year, we were all there in spirit and anxiously waiting news on the most anticipated titles, TV shows and movies in the upcoming year. Check out which moments of SDCC 2014 made the cut!

1) Everything Marvel Entertainment brought to Comic Con

Let’s first start with The Avengers: Age of Ultron. The panel kicked off with a montage of all of the Marvel films to date ending with a full body Thanos, voiced by Josh Brolin. Brolin even appeared on stage with the Age of Ultron cast, with Infinity Gauntlet in tow (pictured above).

Speaking of Thanos, he’s set to appear in the upcoming The Guardians of the Galaxy this August and the movie hasn’t even been out yet and Marvel is already working on a sequel for a 2017 release! On top of that, Marvel also announced an animated series for the Guardians but no word yet on a release date.

The panel also unveiled some pretty sweet footage from Age of Ultron. In the scene, we see Don Cheadle appear as Rhodey, joining in with the rest of the Avengers (Iron Man, Captain America and the Hulk) attempt to lift Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. Their fun is interrupted when one of Stark’s Iron Legion robots, which has clearly gone all sorts of wrong, crashes into Stark Tower followed by a multitude of robots crashing and attacking the Stark Tower. We soon see all of the Avengers in action, including Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch! There’s also footage of Iron Man’s Hulkbuster fighting the Hulk but we have no idea why yet. We hear Ultron’s voiceover to a “Vision”, which we don’t see in the footage but we get a good look at in the poster above (top left corner). So far, we know that Paul Bettany, who also provides the voice of JARVIS, will appear as The Vision but we know nothing else of what his character will bring to the sequel. Andy Serkis, in an unknown and non-motion capture role, was also seen before ending with Stark finding Captain America’s broken shield and an array of bodies before Ultron’s full body.

Perhaps the best part of all this footage was the soundtrack.  Throughout the entire teaser an eerily creepy version of “I Got No Strings” (from Pinocchio) was playing.  The final shot of Ultron, ends with him saying “There are no strings on me”.

The last big reveal for Marvel was Ant-Man. The studio released the poster above on Friday night, along with test footage and more casting news. Director Peyton Reed (who replaced Edgar Wright), Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly (who has been cast as Hope Pym or Hope Van Dyne according to Michael Douglas, which would make Wasp her mother) and Corey Stoll (Darren Cross who becomes the villain Yellowjacket) were present at the panel. The test footage, according to IGN, was set in an empty lab with Hank Pym talking to Scott Lang about how superheroes are now a joke causing nothing but mayhem and destruction. Asking Lang to handle a ‘small job’ for him, the camera then moves around the lab finally revealing the silver Ant-Man helmet on a table.

The only downside to the Marvel panel was no Q&A which means no one ever really found out the real reason Edgar Wright was not attached to Ant-Man and nothing on the new cast of Fantastic Four and who’s been cast as Doctor Strange.

2) Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Panel

This was one of the most anticipated panels at Comic Con this year because people were hoping to get more teases at the Holy Trinty that is Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. We were not disappointed. We saw the first look at Superman and Batman for the film but it was during the panel that DC finally gave us a look at Gal Gadot in her Wonder Woman get up (pictured above).

Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot and director Zack Snyder were in attendance at the panel at Hall H, Comic Con’s biggest space, and also gave the crowd some footage of the movie. Barely a minute long, the clip was set in Gotham City in the rain, no less. Batman pulls back a cover over the Bat-signal and floating up right in the middle of the signal is Superman, with glowing red eyes. The scene ends with Batman looking directly at Superman before the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice logo appears on screen. Dozens of videos have been posted online but deleted shortly after so hopefully we get something official from WB soon!

3) Game of Thrones Season 5 Cast Announced

If you still haven’t gotten over Oberyn Martell’s death in season four of Game of Thrones, the video should help you cope until next Spring.

During the Game of Thrones panel at Comic Con, the video above revealed a number of cast members set to join the HBO show, many of which are members of House Martell. Even better news, three of Oberyn’s bastard daughters will make a visit to King’s Landing and they love weapons as much as their father did. BAD. ASS.

Some of the new cast members include Star Trek: Deep Space Nine‘s Alexander Siddig (as Oberyn’s older brother Doran), Tony Sebastian, Nell Tiger Free, Rosabell Laurenti Sellers, Keisha Castle-Hughes and Jonathan Pryce.

4) Mad Max Trailer

WB released this Comic Con worthy trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road during the convention and fans went mad, no pun intended. This is the first Mad Max film in almost 30 years and the two-minute trailer is packed with explosions galore.

Mad Max: Fury Road will star Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult and is set for a May 2015 release.

5) The TV show trailers

Comic Con is no doubt the place where TV shows show off their stuff, especially since fans are pretty much on a withdrawal after the finales. We definitely weren’t disappointed with Arrow‘s season 3 trailer, including a sneak peek at Colton Haynes as Arsenal and Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer (aka The Atom). The Walking DeadThe Originals and The Flash along with many others made big hits at Comic Con. Can the Fall schedule be here already?

6) The HerUniverse Fashion Show

7) The mtvU Fandom Awards

The first ever mtvU Fandom Awards kicked off Comic Con weekend giving fans complete control on who would win the awards. Stars from hit TV shows like Teen Wolf and Game of Thrones were in attendance as the former took home Fandom Feat of the Year with fans raising money to build a wolf sanctuary and the latter taking home the biggest OMG Moment of the Year on TV for Joffrey’s death in season 4. Hannibal won Breakout Fandom of the Year, Delena (Damon/Elena) won Ship of the Year and Harry Potter took home Best Fandom Forever.

8) The Simpsons/Family Guy Crossover

Fox screened the first footage for The Simpsons/Family Guy crossover during Comic Con weekend which included a cameo from Bob Belcher, the title character of Fox’s other show, Bob’s Burgers. The only downside of the footage is that it seemed to give most of the video away but we’ll still look forward to it when it airs in September.

9) Celebs Going Incognito

As a celebrity it’s probably really hard to walk around Comic Con unnoticed; that’s why they resort to disguises. Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe walked around the Comic Con floor in a full Spiderman disguise, which Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams, opted for a simple Spiderman mask instead.

Even Peter Jackson got into the cosplay spirit, walking around in a creepy evil jester:

 10) Celebs Fangirling Over Other Celebs

Stars, they’re just like us! In a sense that they are fans of other stars, of course.

In a video uploaded by HitFix, we see Paul Rudd at Comic Con talking to reporters about Ant-Man and Edgar Wright leaving the project. If you go to the 3:13 mark, you see Mark Ruffalo in the background mouthing, “Is that Paul Rudd?”.
